Data loss can come at you from every angle. It happens every day to businesses of all sizes, shapes and industries. It’ll take you by surprise, wiggle its way into your company and rip apart your reputation before you even know what’s going on.

As a company that specializes in data protection and backup, our ultimate goal is to shed light on data loss and help people better understand the ‘how’ behind it all. Let’s take a quick look at some of the ways data loss can wreak havoc on your company.

1

Yet another accident.

Accidents happen all the time, and unfortunately, you can’t exactly tell your employees to never have another accident. It just won’t happen. At the end of the day, humans are simply too good at making mistakes. However, you know what this means… your data will forever remain a target of human nature.

Whether a staff member deletes something they shouldn’t or someone spills a cup of coffee on a piece of equipment, anything can happen. You’ve heard of the Toy Story 2 fiasco, right? 90% of the popular animated film was deleted in mere seconds. Since the data wasn’t backed up properly, it took Pixar weeks and hundreds of man-hours to recover everything that was lost.

2

It came from inside.

Humans don’t just accidentally destroy data; humans also purposely destroy data.  In 2016, IBM discovered that 60% of all cyber attacks were the direct or indirect result of internal forces – meaning some employees accidentally attacked their company while others did it on purpose. And why would employees purposely attack their company? For a variety of reasons… but mainly – to steal, sell, give away, or corrupt data.

3

A hacker here. A hacker there. A hacker everywhere.

If you’re looking to lose a lot of data, stand back and let a hacker work his or her magic. Just look at this infographic of the world’s largest data breaches. If you filter the graphic by the number of data breaches as a result of a hack, the results are frightening. It’s not alarming simply because the number of records lost is somewhere up in the high millions but more so because many of these breaches were detected years after the fact.

4

Don’t anger Mother Nature.

There are things you can control, like the temperature of your building, the passwords your employees use, and whether or not you allow food by the office equipment. And then… there are things you can’t control, like Mother Nature. Floods, tornadoes, earthquakes and hail the size of watermelons – while many of these natural occurrences might be few and far between, they still happen. And when they do happen, it’s important that your data is backed up and protected offsite.

5

You’re probably going to need some bug spray.

Aside from hackers, other cyber threats are capable of destroying, stealing and compromising your data as well. From social engineering and viruses to phishing and ransomware, threats like these are all ready and willing to have it out with your business. If your security isn’t layered and your data isn’t backed up, your business will lose that battle 10 times out of 10.

Did someone turn off the lights?

The power goes out and your computer immediately shuts down. Once the power turns back on and your computer reboots, so everything should still be there, right? Well, that depends. When the power unexpectedly turns off, things may not always shut down properly. Prior to the power outage, certain data could fail to process completely, which could ultimately result in lost or corrupted data. If it happens too much, it could damage your hardware permanently and take all your data down with it.

7

Where’d you leave your phone this time?

It doesn’t matter where you live or what occupation you have… thieves exist everywhere. They aren’t above stealing your phone, tablet, laptop or any other connected device – all of which comes with your data. Steal the right device at the right time and a thief could end up with an expensive piece of equipment and some expensive data to go with it.

8

Try not to drop this one.

Nearly half of all consumers will break their phones at some point. But that’s not the only device people will break. They’ll also break their laptops, computers and other devices that are overflowing with sensitive, irreplaceable data. If they haven’t backed that data up and that device breaks, then you’ll be looking for a way out when there isn’t one.
